Tu An: Portrait of a poet and translator

China.org.cn, 05 31, 2017

Tu offers tips to young translators, "the most important thing for a translator is to choose. First of all, you need to choose what to translate. It has to be something valuable, something beneficial for the readers and something that's good, beautiful and compassionate. The so-called bestsellers may be catchy for one month, maybe two, but they won't have any legacy. Similarly, some books are just distasteful, while not necessarily obscene. It might be OK to translate them just because it's right for the market. Just don't get in that too deeply. As a translator, you need to do good, to bring to readers food for thought. You are responsible for this." Tu says that if one translates to become famous and make money, then one will be a mediocre translator, which is a great shame. You must translate for culture and the transmission of civilization. [Photo by Chen Boyuan/ China.org.cn]
